The chairman of opposition party MpD began a five-day visit Wednesday, August 19, to the islands of Fogo and Brava. Ulisses Correia e Silva’s trip to Cape Verde’s two southernmost islands comes within the framework of the party’s pre-campaign activities in the run-up to the 2016 legislative elections. The opposition leader arrived Wednesday night in the city of Nova Sintra, on the island of Brava, with an agenda whose main point is the “Brava Commitment” conference, slated for Friday, August 21, when Ulisses Correia e Silva plans to present “the MpD’s vision and proposals for the island over the course of the next decade.” At the center of attention will be problems related to transportation, particularly the lack of flights between Brava and the rest of the country. The conference will also feature the presence of MpD leaders and supporters, local elected officials, representatives of decentralized state services on the island and active members of civil society. On Saturday, Correia e Silva will head to the island of Fogo, where he will preside over two political events. One of these is a meeting with MpD women, slated to take place at 10:00 am at the Santos Pina Hotel in São Filipe. The other will be a meeting with youth from the island, scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm Sunday at Mosteiros municipal auditorium.
